Chilehaus is a unique building that is located in Hamburg, Germany. It is considered as
one of the city’s more interesting buildings. And because of this, it is one of the more popular landmarks in the city and has gone through renovation to protect and preserve its legacy.
Chilehaus History
Chilehaus is one of the older buildings found in Hamburg. It was built from between 1922 and 1924. The building was commissioned by the shipping magnate Henry B. Sloman who had made a fortune trading saltpeter from Chile. It was because of this that the building was so named. It is one of the few remaining examples of brick architecture that is still being used today.
Chilehaus Features
Chilehaus is a ten story office building built sometime in the 1920’s. It is one of the few remaining prime examples of Brick Expressionism architecture that was so popular then. The building was designed by architect Fritz Hoger with sculptural elements on the facade and interiors provided by sculptor Richard Kuohl.
The building has a reinforced concrete structure along with the use of 4.8 million dark Oldenburg bricks. The building is situated on a rather difficult terrain which required 16-meter deep reinforced concrete pilings to gain better stability. Chilehaus is known for its unique top which gives it a look similar to that of a prow of a ship.
